Conference to Abolish War: May 4-6 2008, Tokyo |
As a major part of this campaign, a large scale “Global Article 9 Conference
to Abolish War” will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from May 4-6, 2008.
With the participation of Nobel Peace Laureates, intellectuals, cultural figures
and NGO activists, the conference will be a forum for dialogue and discussions
on the role that citizens of the world can play to realize the principles of Article
9, through promoting disarmament, demilitarization and a culture of peace.
This three-day event will take place in Makuhari
Messe International Convention Complex, Chiba and is expected to attract up
to 10,000 participants from all over the world. Similar events will take place
in Hiroshima (May 5), Osaka (May 6) and Sendai (May 6).
Program
The opening plenary session on May 4thwill
feature keynote speakers, such as Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Cora
Weiss, as well as many internationally renowned speakers, including
Emmanuel Bombande, Hanifa Mezoui, Beate Sirota Gordon, Kasim Turki, and
Carlos Vargas Pizarro to name just a few.
On the second day (May 5th), in a series of symposiums, experts from
all over the world will hold in-depth discussions about non-violent alternatives
to contemporary conflicts, the contribution of Hiroshima and Nagasaki's experience
to international efforts to abolish nuclear weapons, women and peacebuilding, the role of Article 9 in
Asia, and its impact on the environment.
In addition, there will be panels and workshops on specific topics such as Article
9 and women, its role in conflict prevention, its relevance in the age of globalization,
as well as a lawyers' discussion on Article 9, a peace education workshop, a special
session on Iraq, a testimony by conscientious objectors, and much more.
